The soaring Arch of St. Louis and the city's history as the "Gateway to the West" provide us with symbols of transition, strength, and courage. The Gateway Arch spans space while supporting significant weight. Moving through the Arch during Westward expansion required great courage. Like the Arch, AOSW, with the strength of its members, spans the globe. Meeting in St. Louis will bring this membership and all its strengths together to embrace transitions in healthcare with professionalism, creativity, courage, and vision.
We will use this meeting place, at this time, to bring an understanding of the challenges and opportunities we have not only as a profession, but as a global community, as we seek to define the new realities we face in psychosocial oncology care today.
We call on experienced Oncology Social Workers and those new to the field, our clinicians and our researchers, our educators and our patient navigators to "Meet Us in St Louis" to share knowledge and enthusiasm, and to celebrate AOSW's mission to "advance excellence in the psychosocial care of persons with cancer, their families and caregivers."
Looking to the future, oncology social workers are challenged to lead the way for all those impacted by cancer. In a time of proposed change and reform in healthcare priorities, AOSW continues to provide leadership. The field of oncology social work and the larger healthcare system are perched for innovation, creative change and regeneration.
Conference Objectives:
- Discuss the meaning and effect of health care reform, how it has affected access to care, and social work's advocacy role.
- Promote sustainable business practices for oncology social workers including benchmarking, reimbursement, grant writing, and other fund development.
- Enhance oncology social workers' understanding of evidence-based and evidence-informed practices and how they are useful in clinical settings.
- Present strategies and models for sharing our knowledge with others through publishing, multimedia and other means of communication.
- Develop skills to understand and translate published research into clinical practice.
- Explore the use of on-line technologies and social media (including ethical, legal and marketing issues), to serve those affected by cancer.
- Consider models of integrative medicine that enhance a survivor's ability to cope with the psychosocial aspects of cancer.
- Highlight clinical interventions for friends and family of those diagnosed with cancer with special attention to the long-term effects of a care giving role.
- Investigate the role of oncology social workers in addressing ethical dilemmas and the intersection of social work, research, business, and/or medical ethics.
- Showcase leadership skills at all levels and in all settings of oncology social work practice.
Reflect on oncology social work over the long haul and how we can continue to feel fulfilled and excited by the work.
- Survey novel opportunities and innovative models for expansion of services and how to fund them including distress screening, palliative care programs, and survivorship programs.
- Understand spiritual, cultural, social, economic and lifestyle diversity in order to develop specialized, targeted interventions.
- To evaluate practice across disciplines in relation to patient navigation processes in cancer care.

ExCEL in Social Work
Excellence in Cancer Education & Leadership
ExCEL strives to improve the delivery of psychosocial-spiritual care for oncology patients through an innovative social work-specific educational program. ExCEL is a collaborative partnership between the City of Hope, the Association of Oncology Social Work (AOSW) and the Association of Pediatric Oncology Social Workers (APOSW). The investigative team for this five-year National Cancer Institute-funded initiative includes: Shirley Otis-Green, Betty Ferrell, Marcia Grant, Brad Zebrack and Barbara Jones.
The ExCEL in Social Work pre-conference to the AOSW 2011 Annual Conference will address critical aspects of quality care while encouraging oncology social workers to meet and exceed the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) 2008 Report - "Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs."
