The University of Maryland is pleased to announce that eight modules on breast cancer are now available online. This project is funded by a grant from the Komen MD Affiliate (Komen for the Cure). The modules cover breast cancer epidemiology, risk, screening, diagnosis, staging, treatments, survivorship, metastatic breast cancer and breast cancer disparities. The modules were originally designed to educate health professionals (nurses, social workers and pharmacists) but they are accessible to the public as well. Each module provides basic information, with access to more in-depth information of particular interest to nurses, social workers and pharmacists. Links are embedded to websites and articles with further information. The modules are free. Continuing Education credits are available for nurses and social workers for a nominal fee. SBM Cancer SIG Mentoring Event: Grant Review Workshop
The Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM) Cancer Special Interest Group (SIG) invites applications from any junior investigators interested in cancer research to apply for selection into a free mentoring event workshop held on Wednesday April 11, 2012 during the 33rd Annual Meeting of the SBM in New Orleans, LA.
The third annual SBM Cancer SIG Mentoring Event: Grant Review Workshop is an opportunity for new or junior investigators to obtain written and oral feedback on a grant proposal from nationally-recognized leaders in the fields of psycho-oncology and cancer control and to participate in a mock grant review.
Applicants selected to attend the workshop will be notified by mid December 2011 and will be expected to submit a grant proposal in February 2012 for review at the workshop. This highly-selective workshop is free for participants but enrollment is limited. Individuals not selected for the grant review process will also be able to attend the event as observers. You can still attend the event as an observer even if you do not submit an application.
We welcome distribution of this announcement. We also welcome senior leaders in cancer research and behavioral medicine to consider serving as a mentor/grant reviewer for this event.
To apply, please submit the following as a single PDF document by 5:00 PM CST on December 5, 2011 to Dr. Aimee James at: jamesai@wudosis.wustl.edu
1. Cover letter with your name, department, institution, mailing address, email address, and title of your project. Please specify whether the proposed research is a new grant proposal or one that has been previously submitted and reviewed, and the mechanism/agency to which you plan to submit. 2. As part of the workshop, attendees will participate in a mock review of their proposal by 2 expert reviewers. They will have the opportunity to listen to reviews of their work and gain experience as a grant reviewer by participating in the review of 1-2 other proposals as a third reviewer.

Announcing "The Underserved Outreach Project"
Supportive and palliative care is an area of great disparity in cancer care for low-income and minority families. The Lloyd Symington Foundation has partnered with Collinge and Associates to make available 300 copies of the family caregiver multimedia education program Touch, Caring and Cancer: Simple Instruction for Family and Friends to address this need. This program was developed and evaluated in an NCI-sponsored research project that found family caregivers could significantly reduce pain and other symptoms in patients at home by using the methods taught. The materials will be given to cancer centers and organizations that serve low-income, minority and underserved populations, to help develop the untapped potential of family members to improve quality of life of their loved ones with cancer.
The target period for distribution of these programs is March 1-June 1, and early applications will receive priority consideration. The link below describes this effort and provides the application materials. If you are part of an organization that serves these groups, please check out the program announcement. And feel free to forward this info to anyone you think might appreciate the opportunity.
