AOSW 2008 Conference

Unbridled Spirit: Innovations and Creative Approaches in Oncology Social Work

Join Us at the 24th AOSW Annual Conference
The 24th Annual AOSW conference was held May 7-9, 2008 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Unbridled Spirit is the motto of the state of Kentucky, where AOSW hosted our 24th Annual conference. In the same spirit, the University of Louisville’s Kent School of Social Work has created the nation’s first Endowed Chair in Oncology Social Work. As the field of oncology social work evolves and continues its leadership in health social work, AOSW provides this forum to explore the challenges and opportunities of our profession.

This conference was dedicated to inspired scholarship and the creative exploration of evidenced based practices through interdisciplinary collaboration. This conference served as a catalyst for transformation in these areas:

  • Psychosocial role in end of life care and bereavement, grief, and loss with adults and children.
  • Advocacy and practice in quality of life issues and ethical dilemmas on the micro, mezzo and macro levels.
  • Understanding and application of palliative care principles across the continuum of cancer treatment.
  • Knowledge base and assertive interventions in pain and symptom management to include social work provided complimentary and alternative techniques.
  • Provision of therapeutic interventions to include cognitive behavioral therapy, group counseling, family therapy, play therapy, expressive arts, internet delivered clinical services, creative arts and stress management.
  • Creative problem solving for access to care and system navigation issues that affect diverse populations, under-resourced clients, language minorities, and the elderly.
  • Clinical interventions, patient/family education, and practitioner skill development in issues concerning sexuality, physical intimacy, body image changes and fertility.
  • Curricular development and mentoring in practice and educational settings to stimulate critical thinking and innovative solutions in addressing medical technology opportunities/challenges.
  • Development of research, both qualitative and quantitative, to assess best clinical practices, especially as it relates to cancer as a chronic illness, cancer survivorship, genetic counseling issues, and young adults with cancer.
  • Program development, leadership, and enhanced grant writing skills to promote innovative services.
  • Strategies and techniques for oncology social work self care to address compassion fatigue and secondary trauma.
