The 28th Annual AOSW conference is headed to Boston, a city well known for a rich sense of history and tradition, as well as innovation, science, education and advances in cancer care. It is a place where old and new collide on every street corner. In our ever-changing world of health care reform and new oncology initiatives, such as the President's Commission on Cancer, Boston is the perfect setting to explore and celebrate our collective history while affirming our commitment to further advancing the psychosocial care of cancer patients.

AOSW members include oncology social workers, patient navigation experts, psychologists, nurses, and other professionals who practice in hospitals, outpatient clinics, home care and hospice agencies, community wellness programs, patient advocacy organizations and other settings. Like Boston, we have a rich history of revolutionizing cancer care through our attention to the emotional, social, behavioral, and spiritual aspects of cancer. We invite you to share your innovative ideas, research, and best practice models so that we may explore our profession's revolutionary spirit while meeting the challenges of changing mandates and emerging trends in the field of psychosocial oncology.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To examine how our history, skills and knowledge inform our current practice and move us in new directions as leaders in psychosocial oncology care
  • To discuss and explore changes to and innovations in practice based on the changing landscape in healthcare
  • To discuss innovative practice in the implementation of the IOM report
  • To advance evidence-based practice and enhance communication of our work and roles in the language of the medical/health care world
  • To explore specialized therapeutic interventions, including group work, individual and family therapy, expressive arts, web-based clinical services, and integrative therapies designed to reduce distress and enhance the coping of individuals and systems impacted by cancer
  • To enhance the practitioner's knowledge of the spiritual care needs of cancer patients and to promote competence and confidence in the delivery of psychospiritual care
  • To improve awareness of the needs of cancer survivors and to enhance practice across the survivorship continuum
  • To explore the impact of budget constraints on the care we can provide and examine the outcomes and effects of program changes and shifting roles
  • To identify the needs of underserved and diverse populations, including children, the elderly, GLBT, immigrants, the homeless, and other marginalized groups
  • To examine how we advocate for, train, and nurture our daily practice as well as the next generation of psychosocial oncology care practitioners
  • To identify and discuss ethical issues in psychosocial oncology care
  • To examine and explore the role of oncology social workers as practitioners in and collaborators with the emerging practice of patient navigation
  • To explore how the varied settings, roles and functions of oncology social workers influence and inform the field as a whole, expose new areas of need and encourage the development of new skills and unique methods for meeting those needs
  • o enhance understanding of evidence-based practices and evaluation methods in the field of psychosocial oncology, which can be utilized to inform quality service provision
